Boroughmuir News - Season 2011/12

Phil Smith to leave 'Muir

It is with regret that Boroughmuir RFC announces today that Phil Smith, the 1st XV backs' coach, has decided to step down at the end of the season.

Phil has worked alongside Head Coach Fergus Pringle for the last 3 years. Through Phil's and Fergus's leadership Boroughmuir has helped develop a number of young players, notably Harry Leonard and Robin Hislop who have moved up to the professional ranks. Also this season 4 of our Under20 players have achieved caps for Scotland at this level.

Phil thought it was the right time for a change after 3 years with the club and is seeking a new challenge as a Head Coach with another club.

Phil leaves Boroughmuir in good shape and we thank him and wish him all the best for the future.

Vision for BRFC - The New Era

‘BRFC to be the heart of a sustainable community sports club driving rugby success, sporting participation and performance across all ages and genders within our community’

Core aims

  • To provide a home for all community sport in southwest Edinburgh.
  • To provide a sporting environment where sporting excellence can thrive.
  • To provide a thriving sustainable social enterprise community resource for all.
  • To provide a culture of sporting enjoyment for all – players, volunteers, coaches, spectators and wider community members.
  • To provide a charitable club environment fit for purpose for our benefactors to support.

How do we achieve this new vision?

Objectives

  • Develop a legal structure to enable BRFC to deliver on the vision and embrace other club partners.

  • Develop a sustainable business plan and development plan for the whole Club under the aims set out above. Drive income generation opportunities through a planned approach which complements the vision.

  • Develop our community partnerships with other core Meggetland users - Boroughmuir HC, Cala HC, Boroughmuir Thistle FC and St Andrews RC and embrace them into our new structure.

  • Engage as a full member of the Colinton Sports Hub and offer to take the lead as the main sporting social venue available for all hub clubs.

  • Develop our operational staff, approach and resources to enable us to develop a community club and community development ethos.

  • Develop the senior rugby strategy with at least 3 teams to enable the Club to achieve its status as a leading top 3 club in Scotland and one that the whole community want to support.

  • Develop a dynamic, vibrant and well-structured rugby youth section, including girls, which attracts youngsters and parents to the community club which provides an opportunity for a  lifelong association for them as a family.

  • Develop a strong volunteer base from which to build capacity across all parts of our Club activity and engender a sense of belonging and well being within the Club.

  • Undertake an assessment of the facilities and identify improvements in the short- and medium-term which will assist in the delivery of the new club vision.

  • Develop a funding plan for both sponsors and grant aid funders to support the growth of the Club and its activities. Work with partners to maximise opportunities for all.

  • Develop our knowledge of good practice within sporting social enterprise and learn from others how we can become a major resource to our community.

The club members are asked to embrace this change and ACT NOW and come forward to be part of a working committee, contact board@boroughmuirrfc.co.uk  to be involved with the new beginning for Boroughmuir RFC.

Meeting to Receive Results of Club Review

As everyone is aware, the Boroughmuir Board commissioned a root and branch review earlier in 2011, to be carried out by specialists: PMR Leisure.  This Review has involved gathering the opinions of many club members to establish what we want OUR club to be in the future; our ambition (on and off the field) and how we will best achieve this.  This review and the subsequent actions will hopefully be looked back upon as a milestone in Boroughmuir’s history and attendance of all ages and genders, players and non-player is important to ensure that it is fully supported by the whole club.

PMR have now concluded their review and will be presenting their findings to the club at a meeting on Thursday 12th January 2012 at 8.15pm.  ALL MEMBERS ARE URGED TO ATTEND THIS MEETING as this is a hugely significant process to have gone through and it is anticipated that the outcome of this review will recommend changes to our club that are unprecedented in its history.

While the Board are endeavouring to utilise various communication channels to inform members of this meeting, we ask all to spread the word themselves. Attendance will be essential to best understand the Review outcomes and set plans for the future.

Please call the club on 0131 443 7571 or email bill.watson@boroughmuirrugbyclub.co.uk to confirm your attendance as we must plan adequate facilities for your attendance.

If you require assistance in getting to the club for this meeting; please inform in your communication and we will endeavour to arrange transport to and from the Club for the meeting.

Kind regards

Bill Watson

Marie Curie Fund Raisers

I have been allocated a bag packing day at Marks & Spencer's in the Gyle  on Thursday  22nd. December from 9am -6pm manning 16 check outs.

I am trying to recruit over 80 volunteers to cover this day. People must be 16 or over and able to do either an hour, two hours or even 4 hours.

This is in aid of the Marie Curie Hospice at Fairmilehead which we adopted as a club after the tender loving care shown to Bruce Hay in his final days, other players, our friends and loved ones.

The hospice is over 40 years old and provides holistic care totally free of charge for people with cancer and other life limiting illnesses either as in-patients or out-patients.

As so many people want to end their days in their own homes we now have a team of nurses who go to their homes and tend their loved ones to ease the strain from the families and give them some respite.

We are badly in need of funding for the hospice and this venture of home nursing.

It takes over £4 million pounds a year to run the hospice, home care and our other services and we only get 40% of that from the government. For the other 60% we have to rely on the generosity of the public and local businesses to raise this money.

The 22nd December could go a long way to helping us and I would be most grateful if anyone can help us on the day. If you can please E.Mail me - allanmackay48@yahoo.co.uk  or telephone me on  0131-443-1936 with your details and if you can do 1 hour, 2 hours or even 4 hours.

Thanks for reading this and, as I say, I will be very grateful for your help!

Sincerely,

Allan Mackay Past Presdent

It is also planned to have another Players Reunion lunch to follow on from the very successful event last year and also to re-establish a ladies lunch for the season, further details of both of these will be provided for the second half of the season.

Lunch will be served for 1.00pm and the Bruce Hay Suite Bar will be open from 12.00 for pre-lunch drinks.

MacKenzie's will continue to provide the pre-match lunches of a Starter and Main Course followed by Cheese & Biscuits with Tea or Coffee.

The price of this years pre-match lunch has been set at £22.00 per head for individual bookings, however if you are able to book a table of 8 - 10 persons then a reduced price of £20.00 per head is available and maintains the price at previous year levels.

All bookings must be confirmed by the Tuesday evening of the week of the lunch to allow the planning of the lunch to be completed for the Saturday.

Last year proved very successful for the pre-match lunch attendance. We hope that we can continue this year and achieve full utilisation of the Bruce Hay suite for these occasions.

Alan MacKay, Norrie Bryson , Ronnie Smith and Ronnie Pearson will again be the event organisers for each day, organising table plans and taking payment on match days.

If you have any comments or requirements please pass these to Stephen Wilson or Alan, Norrie and Ronnie and we will endeavour to respond.

New Recruits

Boroughmuir have recruited wisely to bolster the depth of talent available to the club. The following players have been recruited:

Sep Visser

Sep is a Full Back / Winger who arrives from Tynedale Rugby Club in the North East of England. He was a leading light at the Northumberland club having scored 23 tries in 29 games last season. Sep has been capped by Holland and yes - he is Tim's younger brother.

Iain Moody

Iain has played consistently well for Kelso over the past few seasons, primarily at No.8. The 6' 5" player spent the summer in New Zealand so should be fit and ready for action.

Andy Watt

Andy joins from Dunfermline where he was the regular scrum-half. The ex Dollar Academy pupil has represented Caledonian Region at U15 – U18 levels.

Matt Harvey

Matt is a flanker joining from Kirkcaldy. The Scotland Under 19 cap spent 18 months in New Zealand improving his rugby and had a fine season for the Blues last term.

Chris Rhodes

Chris is a goal kicking stand-off from Garnock rugby club. He represented Glasgow at Under 18 level.

Mike Crawley

Mike is a 19 year old centre from Stewart’s Melville who Represented Edinburgh at U17 level and Scotland at both U17 and U18.

Lynton Brinck

The ex-Muir South African returns to the fold after a year playing for Lismore. Normally a flanker Lynton did turn out in the centre for Lismore on at least one occasion.

Andy Knight

Former 'Muir skipper Andy Knight returns to Meggetland after cutting his coaching teeth at Forrester. Andy will join the 2nd XV coaching team as they look to push for the title.
