Online Survey

October 2009

Dear Player/ Volunteer

I am a 4th year Geography student at the University of Glasgow.  I am currently undertaking research as part of my final year dissertation. The study is looking specifically into “The Economic Geographies of Scottish Club Rugby”.  It would be a great help to me if you could fill out a brief survey which I have prepared online, this should take no more than 5 minutes to complete.

Ideally I am looking for at least 12 respondents from each club to contribute to this study and complete one of the specific questionnaires below. (i.e 12 players and 12 volunteers)

If you are a volunteer with the club please use this link (volunteer= coach, club steward, secretary that contributes time and effort in excess of what they are paid for)

If you are a 1st XV Squad Member, please use this link;

Thank you very much for your time and help,

Bears' player in "CharitableNESS 2009 Challenge"

September 2009

Bears' player Malcolm Jack and friends from the outstanding Boroughmuir mini rugby teams of the early '90s are reaching the culmination of their "CharitableNESS 2009 Challenge", which involves 1 Loch Ness monster, 2 charities, 4 friends, 8 races, 10 months, 112 miles and a target of £20,000!

The team of 4 are running a series of 8 high profile races during 2009, culminating in the Chicago Marathon on 11th October 2009, carrying a giant “Nessie” costume. They aim to raise £20,000 for two registered charities: Cancer Research UK and Scottish Love in Action (SLA). The team have completed 5 races and now have just 3 races to go, including the Great North Run in Newcastle this Sunday, the River Ness 10k on 4th October and then Nessie’s ultimate challenge one week later – a full marathon in Chicago on 11th October.

In May, the team and 12 friends took Nessie round the Edinburgh Marathon relay, with Bears’ players Jamie “TallNESS” Scott and Stu “OldNESS" Didcock joining the team. Former Bears' skipper Derek "LaziNESS" Murray was noticeably absent because "he doesn't like running". Anyone watching him at training will concur.

The team is running in memory of Colin's Dad, who was a big rugby fan and was a frequent visitor to Meggetland to watch Colin, Malc and Robin when they played mini rugby and for Boroughmuir School XV. He sadly died of cancer in 2002 and so the team decided to raise money for Cancer Research UK. The team is also raising money for Edinburgh-based charity Scottish Love in Action (SLA) which supports nearly 600 formerly destitute children in two home-cum-schools in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

If you would like to support the team, see some pictures of Nessie in action, or make a donation, please go to www.charitableNESS.co.uk.

Malc played a key role in the Bears' relegation last year, and will return in November to add his own brand of slow wing play and general blindness to the Bears' league campaign.

Under 18 Update

August 2009

The U18s continued their preparations for the coming season with a game against Wellington College from Somerset. Melrose Colts had narrowly beaten the visitors earlier in the week. The game was split into three 25 minute sessions with 'Muir comfortable winners by 40 points to 7, scoring 6 tries to 1.

Most of the scoring occurred in the first 25 minutes with 4 tries to 1. The 2nd period saw a lot of changes for both teams and no points scored, with a final couple of tries scored by 'Muir in the final third.

Try Scorers; Ross Peacock, Matt Walker, Cammy Roscoe[2], Rory Scott and Greg Alexander.

Conversions: Rory Scott[4], Jonny Byrne-Leitch[1]

The previous weekend Muir took 2 teams to a 10 a side tournament in Stirling playing  an U17 and and U18 team. The 18s won all their games and the 17s lost only one. A promising build-up to the first league game against Musselburgh next Saturday at home.

Colts Win League

February 2009

Boroughmuir Under 18s have won the Edinburgh and Lothians Under 18 League title having completed their fixtures winning all 11 matches in the process.

The 'Muir Colts were chased all the way by Haddington Under 18. Haddington's only defeat came at the hands of 'Muir in the first game of the season, 'Muir running out 10 - 20 winners in East Lothian.

'Muir scored no less than 380 points whilst conceding just 31 and congratulations go to all members of the squad and the coaching staff who have done the club proud.

Youth Success

February 2009

On Sunday 1st February, Boroughmuir Under 15s beat Marr away from home, getting to the National Cup semi-final. This continues an excellent season for them, with only 1 defeat in a competitive fixture to-date.

With over 30 players having played in the league and cup-matches to date, this reflects a real 'squad' effort.

Their semi-final is away to a very strong Stirling side, currently scheduled for the 22nd February. The lead coach  (Kevin Anderson) says that "The boys have really stepped up a gear this season and have put in some big performances to get us to where we are in the league and cup." He went on "They are relishing the game against Stirling County and we have to keep them focused as they all know that we’re only one game away from a run out at Murrayfield. Our preparation hasn’t been fantastic with the weather hampering our ability to train but the coaches know that to a man everyone in the team will be giving 110% on the day."

The Under 16s booked their National Cup semi-final just before Xmas by beating West away from home. Like the Under 15s this continues their excellent form with - again - only 1 defeat in competitive matches.  With 9 of their 14 matches this season being away from home (so far), there's relief that the semi-final is at Meggetland.  The U16s  face a Dumfries team who comfortably top the Glasgow league, on 1st March.

With both the S1 and S2 team having very strong squads and proving very competitive, and the Under 18s undefeated in the Edinburgh league with 1 match to go, this is an excellent season for results across the younger teams; and the current generation of Youth Coaches aren't sure when the last time that we'd teams in both semi-finals at the same time.

Both the Under 15s and Under 16s would appreciate any members who can come along to give support for what will undoubtedly be tough matches.  The final details (KO times, dates) will be posted on the club Forum nearer the date.

Upstairs Bar

August 2008

Members may be aware of the ongoing discussion and consideration of the installation of a permanent bar on the upper floor of the clubhouse at Meggetland.

The Board had, after informal investigation, decided against proceeding with the project on the grounds that the capital outlay could not be justified; an additional bar would not significantly increase revenues; a permanent bar could limit the Meeting Place activity; and the club might be faced with increased staffing costs.

A group of members has requested that the Board reconsider its decision not to proceed with an upstairs bar and so the Board has set up a formal costing and feasibility study so that a decision can be made on an informed basis.

The report will be made widely available to members and a meeting called to enable members to make views known to the Board.

We believe this to be the best way to resolve this difference in views between the Board and some members and hope all members will give the report some consideration and pass their views to the Board.

The report will be made available through a variety of mechanisms including being posted on club notice boards.

International Tickets - SRU Allocation Policy

May 2008

The SRU has re-stated its guidance to Clubs on arrangements for buying international tickets.

It's becoming more and more important that members buy their tickets through the club, not on-line from Murrayfield.  Not only will this help the Club financially through the small commission that is given but, vitally, our allocation of England and France tickets in 2010 will be entirely dependent upon the numbers we sell for Wales and Ireland in 2009.  We will only be able to purchase tickets in 2010 based up to the average number of home tickets bought in the coming 6-Nations series

This hit us hard this year. We are considering introducing a rule that only those who agree to purchase one Italy ticket should be entitled to one for Ireland or Wales.  It appears that many clubs did that last time around, thus getting more England tickets the following year.

Further details about ordering international tickets will be published on the web-site and order forms will also be available in the Clubhouse in the summer.
