Boroughmuir’s 2nd XV took their recent run of
good form to Malleny Park this weekend where they faced a
stiff test from a well organised home pack. The Currie
forwards were intent on stopping Boroughmuir playing the
expansive rugby they are used to and utilising their quick
backline, but in the end it was the Meggetland men who
triumphed, claiming a four try to one victory.
After James White had battered his way over for the opening
score on the right wing, Currie took advantage of ill
discipline and frustration at the referee to slot two
penalties and take the lead. The hosts added a try when the
forwards rumbled over just five metres in from the touchline
and the situation at the interval was looking grim for the
Boroughmuir side.
They regrouped during the break, however, and at the start
of the second half looked a far more composed outfit. Seven
minutes in, White bagged his second try, using Ed Mills
outside him as a decoy he cut inside the Currie defence and
sprinted over from forty metres out to score under the
posts. Fly-half Bruce Aitchison added the conversion.
There could have been a third try when Alan Sievewright
brilliantly turned defence into attack with a jinking run
through the scattered Currie defence, but a knock on as the
move entered the home side’s twenty-two gave Currie some
respite. The lead was soon extended though as Aitchison
converted a penalty attempt from just outside the
twenty-two.
Going into the final quarter of the match, there seemed
little doubt that ’Muir would end up with the win, but they
made sure when White crossed for his hat-trick. From a
simple lineout move on the left, White came into the line at
pace in the centre of the field and burst through the Currie
defence before touching down under the posts. Aitchison
again added the conversion.
There was time for one final score for ’Muir, and they
managed it with fourteen men after player/coach Andy Knight
was yellow carded when he clashed with a Currie forward at
the breakdown. It mattered little, however, as Ed Mills
capped an impressive performance by racing over the line for
the fourth try with Aitchison again adding the extra two
points, this time with a drop goal.
Although there were many aspects of the performance which
could have been improved upon, not least their discipline
despite their feelings that decisions were going against
them, the 2nd XV did well to turn around a
half-time deficit and come away with a comfortable win. The
side has been in good form since they brilliantly beat
Heriot’s at Goldenacre and will no doubt be working hard to
ensure that their winning run continues.
