Twos go down to Hawks
The Twos lost a generally close match when
beaten by Hawks on Saturday by 25-38. Two late scores by
Hawks added 12 points to stretch the score. We got off to a
good start when Andy Knight harried their scrum-half on
their line and Mark Plaice was quick to snap up the loose
ball and score the try. Graeme Blackhall converted.
Then we proceeded to self-distruct by letting
in three very soft tries with some woeful tackling. Hawks
converted two to lead by twelve points. Throughout we
always threatened whenever our backs had reasonable
possession and might have scored a couple ourselves with a
kinder bounce of the ball.
However one such sweeping attack took as
close to the Hawks line and from the ensuing scrum and
second phase, Danny Wright picked up and a good drive over
the line and conversion by Graeme posted a half-time score
of 14-19 for Hawks. Good to have Danny back.
From the restart we pressed hard for most of
the third quarter and two penalties from Graeme and a try by
Derek Murray after much good work by the forwards had us
enter the final quarter leading by 25-19. The kick-off
after the second penalty was poorly dealt with and Hawks
possession aided by some very loose refereeing allowed them
to build a platform. They quickly scored
and converted to lead by a point on 63 minutes. But their
confidence was high now and they had much the better of the
final quarter. Two late tries and a conversion secured
their win by 38-25. There was much to be pleased about in
our performance but also much to work on for next week.
