Aspatria v Boroughmuir

Boroughmuir travelled south to England to face Tynedale and Aspatria in a round robin. After the home side comfortably beat Aspatria in the first game, it was ’Muir’s turn to face the Cumbrian team. Elgan O’Donnell scored the opening try before young winger Tom Bury showed his pace by running in a double. Fly-half Bruce Aitchison converted two of the scores )one with each foot) for a nineteen point half-time lead.

Another three tries came Boroughmuir’s way in the second half, hooker Sean Crombie claiming the first of those from a strong forward drive, following which Rory Couper found a gap that wasn't there and O’Donnell went on a trademark mazy run to round out the scoring. O’Donnell converted all three tries whilst Aspatria failed to claim a reply, the score finishing at 40-0.

Tynedale v Boroughmuir

After a short break, ’Muir were back on the pitch to face home side Tynedale. The first half was played out largely with Boroughmuir on the back foot but some dogged defence, with Fergus Pringle and Chris Hill particularly sterling in their efforts, kept the scoreboard untouched at the break.

Boroughmuir managed more attacking rugby in the second period, but still Tynedale had slightly the upper hand. The hosts came desperately close to scoring from a five metre penalty with ten minutes remaining, but a scything tackle from Pringle kept them out. ’Muir almost snatched victory in the closing moments when Andy Stewart made a break, but Alan Sievewright was unable to find enough space to finish the move off and the final whistle sounded with the scores still tied at 0-0.
