Boroughmuir named Scottish Hydro Electric Club of the Month for October |
|
14 November
2007
Boroughmuir, unbeaten
leaders of Premier Division 1, and with that success being
replicated at youth level, are named today as Scottish Hydro
Electric Club of the Month for October.
The club, currently
leading the Premiership by 15 points, paid the best imaginable
tribute to their Scotland and British Lions bulwark, Bruce Hay,
who passed away at the start of the month, by posting a stream
of victories alongside the introduction of new recruits at youth
level.
The first XV enjoyed
victories over Heriot’s, Hawick, GHA and Ayr; their second XV
were also unbeaten in October with wins against Heriot’s,
Stewart’s-Melville, Biggar and Ayr; and their associate club,
Meggetland triumphed against St Boswells, Melrose 2nds and
Edinburgh BATs. Meggetland also doubled training numbers to
almost 40 on a regular basis.
On discipline Boroughmuir
saw two players yellow carded in October. Elsewhere, the panel
which determined the award, was most impressed by Boroughmuir’s
activity at youth level.
The club’s under-15 and
under-16 teams both went to the top of their national
qualifiers’ groups as a result of wins in their first three
matches, while their first and second year teams were also
undefeated.
At mini level the
volunteer coaches reported increasing numbers at all age-groups
with a vibrant new Primary 4 intake; three tournaments won by
the Primary 6 side; the Primary 5s winning one tournament and
finishing runners-up in another; and the Primary 7s also
finishing runners-up at a tournament.
Anna Crampin, Scottish
Hydro Electric sponsorship manager, said: “Bruce Hay’s
commitment to developing rugby at Boroughmuir is a hard act to
follow but clearly his attitude has rubbed off on a club that is
setting a formidable pace – and not just at first XV level.”
Scottish Hydro Electric
will present a framed
certificate and cheque for £500 to Boroughmuir to mark
their achievement.
Previous winner of the
award this season was Isle of Mull from Scottish Hydro Electric
West League Division 3.
Club of the Month is decided
through three key criteria – performance, discipline and growing
the game

Les
Harris |
|
24 October
2007
Everyone at Boroughmuir was saddened to
hear of the untimely death of Les Harris on Wednesday
24th October 2007. Les had been associated with
Boroughmuir for many years having carried out many roles
including coaching and video recording amongst others.
The Board and Members of Boroughmuir extend their
deepest sympathy to Les's family and friends.
Les's daughter Sarah has sent the
following message:
"I would be grateful if you could pass on
the following to all that knew my Dad at the club.
I want to thank Boroughmuir rugby club for giving my Dad
another reason to fight the cancer that took him from us
on Wednesday. Dad made it to the 'Muir v. Hawick game
last weekend and was delighted to come away with a win.
He was extremely pleased to have the honour of being
asked to be 'Director of Rugby' a few months ago and was
extremely disappointed that he had to turn it down due
to his illness. Dad was dedicated to the club for many
years from coaching in the early 80's to latterly doing
the 1st XV video both home and away. He got immense
enjoyment out of watching the games and the camaraderie
of the 'Muir supporters.
It will be a private family funeral at his request
however, if desired, donations to the Edinburgh Marie
Curie Hospice will be gratefully received.

A
Final Tribute - Bruce's Corner |
|
October 2007
Bruce’s Corner
Juliet and I were away on a planned holiday at the time
of Bruce’s funeral and sadly therefore we were unable to
pay our respects and share in the tributes. However,
such is the greatness of the man, it is never too late.
I first met Bruce thirty-five years ago when, as a
relatively unknown rugby player from Liberton Rugby
Club, he walked into the home dressing room at
Murrayfield as a late replacement for Andy Irvine – an
awesome task by any standards. This, however, was a
final play-off for the District Championships; Edinburgh
vs. Glasgow. Incidentally, also making their debut that
day were Colin McLean, Julian Vaughan and Duncan Wilson.
Against all the odds Edinburgh won a pulsating match and
at the end of the game the crowd rose to applaud not
only an Edinburgh victory but a star in the making, a
future Lion King – Bruce Hay. His overall play was that
of a seasoned international and his forte was his
running up-an-unders, crash, bang, wallop! One could
only close one’s eyes and pray that the pole-axed
recipient of the ball moved, let alone stood up.
Bruce loved to talk rugby and he and I had many happy
hours over the bar in the dear old clubhouse debating
the merits of school vs. youth, club vs. districts,
school masters vs. club coaches, Aussie vs New Zealand
style, etc. Neither of us conceded a point, we agreed to
differ and parted late in the night always as friends,
with mutual respect.
Bruce played with and against the best in the world and
rightly deserves the many tributes paid to him. In
addition, I’d like to draw attention to his modesty. One
could be in his company for hours and pay him due
respect but if you didn’t know him personally one would
never be aware of his many achievements in the game.
I remember John Dawes, captain of the Lions in New
Zealand on Bruce’s first tour, then as coach four years
later in South Africa, coming to Meggetland to get a
personal update on Bruce’s performance. I asked John
what more could he wish from Bruce that he didn’t see in
New Zealand. His reply was immediate, “Nothing, his
place is assured on the field, and off it he was the
model tourist and perfect ambassador for the Lions.”
Small boy to Grandpa, “Where is Bruce’s Corner?” The
reply? “In the north-west of the main pitch between the
twenty-two and the goal line and the goal post to the
touchline. It was in this area, going down the slope,
where Bruce enjoyed scoring many of his tries – either
on the overlap or cutting through the centre. Then
trotting back to kick the conversion, trying hard to
hide his cheeky grin at doing what he liked best –
scoring in front of his home crowd. My try, my kick, my
ball. He just loved running with the ball – I’m sure he
has taken one with him!
After his playing days, as a coach, selector or merely
spectator, it was in this area that Bruce could be found
with his father, brother Allan and close friend Ronnie
Haggarty, enjoying watching his beloved Boroughmuir. It
was in this area of the ground that seventy players,
coaches and managers stood and paid homage to Bruce on
the first training night after his passing. Many didn’t
know him but I’m sure the magnitude of the occasion
touched their hearts.
You may have left your small corner, Bruce, but you have
left us scores of memories and taught us how to play and
enjoy the game in the true sporting fashion that you
have always upheld as player, coach and manager.
Personally I will think of you every Tuesday, Thursday
and Saturday, as I go to support the new club Meggetland
Bears and hear your voice cry out, “Hit and stay big –
get him oot o’ there”, plus a few kind words to the
referee!
Small boy, “Grandpa, who was Bruce?” Grandpa, “”Bruce
Hay was the most loved man and greatest player ever to
wear the Boroughmuir jersey.”

Day |

14 October
2007
H M Day VI was another big success: over 50
former players and members back at the club for lunch, donating
over £1000 to Marie Curie Cancer Charity through a Raffle and an
Auction, a half-time bucket collection that raised over £300 for
the same cause and, of course, Boroughmuir doing the business on
the field to defeat Hawick and win back the Hugh MacMaster
Trophy in a series that we now lead 4-2.
Many thanks to all who attended and contributed,
but especially to Derek Binnie and Andy McBain who donated items
so generously for the Auction.

Nations Tickets 3008 |

8 September
2007
6 NATIONS
INTERNATIONALS 2008
Application forms
for tickets for the 2008 RBS 6 Nations are now
available to be collected from the folders on
the Notice Board in the Clubhouse. Prices are the
same as last year.
The Club's
allocation of tickets for the Murrayfield matches is
less than we were allocated for the corresponding
games in 2006 so it may not be possible to meet all
demands. The SRU has held out the possibility of
extra tickets for the France game but not for the
England one.
Please submit your
application, together with a cheque for the cost of
the tickets requested to Jack Dodd by Friday
9 November 2007
You will need to
deal with this more quickly. You can apply for one
ticket only for each match. Again supplies will be
limited.
Requests
for these tickets must be submitted to Jack Dodd by
Friday 12 October. At this stage no
payment is required. You will only be asked to pay
if you are allocated a ticket.

New
Appointment |
|
27 July
2007
The Board are delighted to announce the
appointment of Iain Paxton to the role of General
Manager.
Iain will need no introduction to members
having been part of the very successful coaching team
along with Sean Lineen a few years ago.
In addition to several years business
experience Iain brings a real dedication to Boroughmuir
Rugby Club, and a first hand awareness of what members
are seeking from their club.
The General Manager role has been
developed to combine many of the responsibilities that
were previously part of the Bar Steward remit but
importantly goes further and reflects the fact that the
rugby club is an evolving organisation which must look
to maximise income generation, whilst retaining the
values we all expect in a rugby club.
I am sure everyone will join in wishing
Iain success in this role and as ever the offers of
assistance from volunteers will be gratefully received.
I would also like to mention the
assistance given to the club by Andy Knight in recent
months in keeping the bar going. Andy will continue to
have role to play and on behalf of the club I would like
to say a big thank you to Andy who demonstrates in a
very tangible way what being a member at Boroughmuir is
all about.

Changes |
|
20 July
2007
I am sorry to announce that Danny
Rutterford has resigned from his post as Commercial
Manager with the club.
Danny has worked tirelessly to establish
the Club’s new business, The Meeting Place, and has laid
solid foundations for the future growth of this
operation aimed at generating much needed revenue to
underpin the playing budget for the club.
During a period where the Club has been
without a bar steward for some months Danny has been
instrumental in picking many tasks left needing to be
done outwith his job remit. He has played a significant
role in the successful Club International held at
Meggetland and also in the Sevens Tournament in April.
I wish Danny success in his future plans
and am delighted that he will turn our regularly for the
Club on Saturdays.
If any club member is interested in the
vacancy we now have please contact me on

The
Spirit of Rugby |
|
30 March
2007
Dear Sir/Madam,
My son Alasdair, a Primary
6 player at Stirling County, suffered a neck injury at the above tournament.
It was sufficiently worrying for medical aid to be called.
Alasdair was immobilised
for 20 minutes. It was a cold and damp and windy day.
Alasdair was in shock and
shivering.
Your P6 coach came over to
check on Alasdair and noticed his distress. Your team were then summoned and
standing with their backs to Alasdair, sheltered him from the elements as he
was tended to.
Alasdair is now OK and
back playing rugby!!
However, on behalf of
Alasdair, (his mother!) and I, we would like to offer the most heartfelt
thanks and highest praise for this most magnificent gesture. It was truly
touching and chivalrous and of the highest order of sporting behaviour which
is a credit to mini rugby in Scotland, and a great credit to your coaches
and your club.
Please pass on our thanks
and wish your P6 coaches, team members and your entire club every best wish
for the future!!!!
Many thanks
David Hyland

Clubhouse Security |
|
11 March
2007
The clubhouse
is buzzing these days but the increased volume of people means it is more
difficult to ensure the security of the expensive equipment the club has
installed througout the building.
Accordingly
the Board has decided to install magnetic locks on the Main Door and the
Corridor door leading to the gym. These are now installed making the
building more secure.
The locks will
be operated by electronic swipe cards. Gym members will be issued with these
as they join and will be responsible for the cost of these cards.
Rugby club
members will not ordinarily be issued with cards at the moment allowing
discussion at the AGM of whether or not the cost of £5 per card should be
added to annual subs or paid by the club. It may be possible to get the
cards sponsored making it free to all members who pay their subs.
In the
meantime entry to the club will either be by: using the intercom which will
be on the front door connected to the bar, gym and office. This will allow
the door to be opened from these locations; at peak times when we are all
about the place such as training nights and Saturday afternoons the magnetic
lock will be off; or lastly if any club member wishes to pay the same fee as
gym members of £5, a card can be ordered for them.

Rankin names squad for Club International
Players from ten Premiership clubs have been selected in
the Scotland Club International squad for their match against their Irish
counterparts.
The game takes place at Meggetland, home of Boroughmuir
RFC in Edinburgh, on Friday 9 March with a 7pm kick-off.
Admission will be £10 for adults and £5 for children,
students and pensioners.
Scotland Club International coach Ian Rankin said: “We
involved a total of 41 players in our first training session and last
weekend’s trial and we’re grateful to coaches throughout the Premiership for
the insight they’ve offered on players.
“Having seen the Ireland Club International side in their
victory over England last weekend I was very impressed with their
organisation. They played against an England side that was significantly
bigger but they out-thought them and, ultimately, out-played them.
“I also know, however, that we have talented players in
the club game here in Scotland who are very much looking ahead to this
contest. There is an immense honour in representing Scotland and that
feeling of pride is shared by the players, the clubs and the communities
that they represent. The more Scottish support we can get along to
Meggetland on the night, the better.”
The squad includes six players involved in the inaugural
club international, played at Donnybrook, Dublin, last season, which was won
by the Irish. They are – Rory Couper, Murray Strang, Alasdhair McFarlane,
Bruce McNeil, Tam McVie and Angus Martyn.
Scotland Club international squad for the match with
Ireland Club international side at Meggetland, Edinburgh on Friday 9 March
(kick-off 7pm)

Heriot’s), Alasdhair McFarlane (Ayr), Andrew Skeen (Watsonians), Murray
Strang (Glasgow Hawks), Marc Teague (Heriot’s), Graham Thomson (Dundee
HSFP), James Thompson (Heriot’s)
Forwards – Andy Adam,
Scott Burnett, Mark Cairns (all Currie), Ben Fisher (Boroughmuir), Richard
Higgins (Melrose), Andy Kelly (GHA), Damien Kelly (Ayr), Steve Lawrie
(Watsonians), Angus Martyn (Boroughmuir), Bruce McNeil (Hawick), Tam McVie

The Touch Rugby World Cup
takes place over the next few weeks in Stellenbosch, South Africa. The captain

The Scotland squad has been

green and blue quarters so far this season.
We wish him and his Scotland
squad all the best for the competition. He should be back in a Boroughmuir

Flag Judges

To distinguish the new role
of the touch judges, they have been renamed flag judges. FJs can indicate
offside at the tackle by raising their flag horizontally in the direction of
the offending team. This flag raising will be mirrored by the opposite FJ so
as to provide visual assistance to the referee. The referee however is not
obliged to act on the offence.
Posts and flags around the
field
-
Corner post, and post at
corner of touch in goal and dead ball line are moved back 2 metres. This
ensures consistency of touch along the entire length of the touch line and
touch in goal line.
Inside the 22 metre line
-
When a defending player
receives the ball outside the 22 metre line and passes, puts or takes the
ball back inside the 22, the following can occur.
-
If the ball is then
kicked directly into touch, the lineout is in line with where the ball
was kicked.
-
If a tackle, ruck or
maul is subsequently formed and the ball is then kicked directly into
touch, the lineout is where the ball crossed the touch line.
Lineout
-
On a quick throw in, the
ball can be thrown straight or backwards towards the defenders goal line,
but not forward towards the opposition goal line.
-
A player peeling off at the
front of the lineout can do so as soon as the ball leaves the throwers
hands.
-
The receiver in a lineout
must stand 2 metres from the lineout.
-
The non throwing hooker
does not have to stand between the 5 metre line and the touch line. They
must conform to law wherever they stand.
-
There is no maximum number
of players in the lineout but there is a minimum of 2.
-
Neither team determines
numbers in the lineout.
-
Pre-gripping is allowed.
-
If a lineout throw is not
straight, the option is a lineout or FK to non throwing team. (Added 1 Oct)
Breakdown (tackle/post tackle)
-
Players entering the
breakdown area must do so through the gate. RIGIDLY APPLIED
-
Immediately the tackle
occurs there are offside lines.
-
The offside lines run
parallel to the goal lines through the hindmost part of the hindmost player
at the tackle.
-
A tackled player must
immediately play the ball and may not be prevented from playing the ball by
any player who is off their feet. (Added 1 Oct)
-
Any other player playing
the ball at the breakdown must be on their feet. (Added 1 Oct)
-
If the ball is unplayable
at the breakdown, the side that did not take the ball into contact will
receive a FK.
-
If the ball is received
directly from a kick and a tackle occurs immediately, and the ball becomes
unplayable, the FK is given to the team who received the kick.
-
There are only 3 penalty
offences (not including dangerous play) at the breakdown.
-
Offside for not coming
through the gate.
-
Offside where defenders
are in front of the last man on their side of the breakdown. i.e. the
offside line
-
A tackled player must
immediately play the ball and may not be prevented from playing the ball
by any player who is off their feet
-
Repeated infringements can
be dealt with as per current law.
-
All FKs are tap kicks
including a mark and a scrum option is available for all FKs.
-
Dangerous play will not be
tolerated. Eg. Diving over the breakdown.
-
The half back should not be
touched unless he has his hands on the ball.
Maul
-
Defending players can pull
down the maul.
-
Players joining the maul
must do so through the gate. RIGIDLY APPLIED
-
If a maul becomes
unplayable, the team not in possession at the start of the maul receives a
FK.
-
The ‘truck and trailer’ is
no longer an offence.
Scrum
-
The offside line for
players who are not in the scrum and who are not the teams scrum half, is 5
metres behind the hindmost foot of the scrum.
Sanctions
-
For all offences other than
offside, not entering through the gate, and Law 10-Foul Play, the sanction
is a FK.

President's Letter |
|
21 September 2006
Dear Members,
I thought it may be helpful given the limited access we currently
enjoy at Meggetland to bring everyone up to speed with developments at BRFC.
BRFC is a company limited by guarantee and its purpose can be summed up as a
club established and maintained by its members for the enjoyment and development
of Rugby. This means the playing and enjoyment of the game and of the social
aspect that makes rugby so special. The club is by and large managed and run by
members giving freely of their time to enable us all to enjoy the benefits of
rugby. While we are based at Meggetland we do not own the facilities but lease
them from the City of Edinburgh Council and obtain lets from them for the
pitches and changing facilities.
There are many aspects to the club with our vibrant youth section
with over 200 children playing for BRFC representing the future of rugby through
to our 1st XV facing stiff competition in the premier league. There is of course
a whole range of other people participating and supporting in many other ways.
Be it acting as coaches, players, stewards, fundraising, refereeing, cleaning,
catering and many other areas that without which we as a club would struggle to
operate.
We are of course in the midst of change, getting to grips with a
new Club House that serves not only as the Home of BRFC but as a sports club for
Hockey, cricket and so on. We have been in a transitional state for some time
now and as you will all be aware we remain unable to make full use of all the
facilities that we hoped would be ready for us at Meggetland. This is completely
out with the control of BRFC. We have engaged with the Council and will continue
to do so to ensure that everything that can be done is being done to get
Meggetland fully operational.
The Club is acutely aware that it is not just us that need these
facilities. The Under18s, local community groups and other sports all need
Meggetland to be available to pursue sport at what will be excellent facilities
– when they are finally available to us. The facilities that the Council have
released to us at the moment are limited to the 1st XV pitch and one changing
room in the new stand for 1st and 2nd XV games only. The reason for
this is that the other facilities are not yet ready for use. This is due to a
combination of factors and we are working with the Council to ensure that these
matters are addressed as quickly as possible.
I share the frustration that many of you will feel with this
state of play but would seek to assure you that the volunteers that make up the
Board of Directors are doing everything possible within their power to get us
all back to Meggetland and to make BRFC the best club we can.
I would ask you to bear with us and to recognise the tremendous
work being done by all the volunteers at BRFC to enable rugby to continue
despite the challenges we are currently facing. You can support the club in this
effort through your continued loyalty, generosity, participation, attendance and
understanding in what remains a challenging period for BRFC.
Yours in sport
Stan Watt, President BRFC
