At the inspiration of 1st XV Manager Grant Wilson we are
interviewing past Boroughmuir stars to get an update on their lives.
This time it's Brian Edwards and before the interview Grant Wilson
explained a bit about the former 'Muir star.
"The name came from a headline
in the Sunday Post if I remember correctly, ('Epic Edwards seals it
for Muir'), but Brian was a straight running, hard hitting centre,
who played for the District of his birth, the North and Midlands,
with a number of Boroughmuir stalwarts of the time. Brian also won B
caps as they were then, and toured Japan in 1989 with a Scotland
party that included the following Meggetland players :Brian
Richardson, Murray Walker, Peter Wright, Sean Lineen and the
manager.
As well as being a terrific player, Brian was never far from the action off the field
along with the Clackmannan Mafia, and wherever he was, hilarity
wasn’t far away. His swimming antics in the River Wye remain the
stuff of legend and the sight of him flagging down the team bus as
it left Cardiff bound for Pontypool after the international from the
back of a moving taxi and wearing nothing but a billboard from a
newspaper vendor’s stand will remain with those who witnessed it
forever.
A great player, captain and friend, despite the fact
he’s picked someone called Dave Cockburn at loose head in his all
time Boroughmuir XV……."

When did you come to Boroughmuir RFC, from where and why?
I came to Boroughmuir direct from Alloa Rugby Club via
the North and Midlands U21 and Senior teams aged 22 (mental age 10 still
the same, that hasn't changed!) Why - I passed the Bruce and Graham Hogg
quiz test in a pub in Dunfermline - it was not that difficult.
Which
players from your time at the club stick in your mind and
why?
-
Andy Higson - the flying Winger - never say die.
-
Norrie Rowan - my Personal Advisor
-
Christian Raducanu - the Romanian Defector
-
Kenny Wood - nightmare
-
Donald Flockhart - Nessie Burgers
-
Hugh McMaster and Mike Hall - all joined up at he
same time and were training partners
-
Dave Cockburn - funny when he's at his most serious
-
Stevie Douglas - always on my shoulder for the short
lay off
Special category - Grant Wilson and Peter Wright for
blacking my balls in Ireland - I have not forgotten!!!! and on and on
and on.....Tommy, Jud, Mumper Wilson,etc
What is your fondest memory of your time at Boroughmuir?
Beating Hawick for the first time at Mansfield Park to
halt their unbeaten run in the league at home and the the two wins in
Wales at Pontypool and Maesteg. there are lots of others.
Do you still follow the club, and if so, how?
Yes I do on the Internet from Dubai and the occasional
vist - was on the tour to New Zealand last year - near killed me
What
are you doing now, rugby – wise?
The occasional training session with a local team callerd
the Hurricanes in Dubai - playing too much golf to do any more.
What are your thoughts on the state of the game in
Scotland?
I really dont know - but I have watched a few games and
it seems as though the basics are missing as all the players appear to
be intent on looking good as opposed to "being guid" as described by a
guru of rugby from Boroughmuir.

played at the club.
